Yes, wife carrying is a real sport. Originating in Sonkajarvi, Finland men race through several obstacles carrying their wives on their backs.

There is even a North American championship. The winners revive a gift of their wife’s weight in beer.

How this sport works is two teams are on the coarse at a time being timed individually. The 2 teams with the fastest time will compete. If the competitor drops his wife or teammate(don’t have to be legally married) their team’s score will have 5 seconds added to their time. However there are no rules saying how the wife must be carried, but a majority of the contestants carry their wife by hanging them off their back locking their legs around their husband’s neck.

Course

The course is 254 meters in length. Most of the courses are have water pits, small hills, and mud.
