Basketball was invented because a professor was searching for a less injury prone sport than football. Dr. James Naismith was a Canadian physical educator that worked at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891. Basketball started off with a soccer style ball and a peach basket at the top of a pole. The new game had thirteen rules which were made in less than a hour. Over the years, basketball evolved into what we know it as today. For example, the basketball hoop was changed to a metal hoop with a net hanging from the hoop and the first basketball game was played on February 27, 1940. Now basketball is one of the most famous sports played in the world and over 250 million people play basketball. So play some basketball today and shoot some hoops!
